Whenever cancer comes up in conversation, the mood instantly shifts towards the anxious end of the emotional spectrum. Thoughts turn to family and friends who have been through it, for better or worse. And you begin to speculate about the mole on your left leg and whether or not its sudden change in color is cause for alarm. Recently, one of our own Swanson employees learned that her spot was no longer just a spot.

There
are classic signs like weight gain, sleepiness and social withdrawal.
Then there are the more subtle symptoms, such as anxiety, diminished
sex drive and difficulty concentrating. Seasonal Affective Disorder,
like other forms of depression, is a mixed bag of mental and emotional
challenges.

I am a self-described news hound. I probably watch, listen to and read more news than most people my age. I always start my day by turning on a morning news show while I’m getting ready. Last week, while watching Good Morning America, something caught my ear. A story about how vitamins and supplements could be bad made me stop eating my eggs and turn up the volume on my kitchen TV.

So you think you can read, huh? Well, consider food labels. The first question is do you read them. The second question is do you understand them. Just because you can read the words doesn’t mean you really understand what you’re reading. Don’t be offended, most people don’t have a clue when it comes to extricating the true facts from the back of packaged foods. You may think know, but chances are you don’t.

Video games and too much TV rot your brain, right? Well, too much TV maybe, but new evidence is coming out pointing to some positive mental health benefits of playing video games. Traditional games of strategy are believed by many researchers to protect against age-related cognitive decline and even boost brain power. Now, the research has gone digital, and video games are revealing some wonderful secrets.

We’ve got more news out of the world of modern medicine today. This time, instead of a reversal on prescription drug efficacy (as with the Zetia and Vytorin study released earlier this week), we seem to have a reversal on one of the most common cancer screening methods: mammograms. Nearly everyone has or will be touched by breast cancer, either personally or, like me, through family members who have or will fight it. Thus, this news affects us all.

In case you missed the headlines this morning on all the national news shows, a new study was released today that basically called out Merck’s Zetia and Vytorin cholesterol-lowering drugs. According to the researchers who conducted the study, these two prescription drugs don’t work...at least not as well as Niacin, a good ol’ natural B vitamin.

The on-going research in the field of healthy dieting and weight loss is exciting to say the least. It turns out that the fruit of the hot chili pepper, known as capsicum, can stimulate thermogenesis—stoke your metabolism in other words. Who would have thought? I know peppers make you sweat, but I had no idea they could really help with weight loss.

Finally, we may be able to do away with all those nasty stereotypes about bad drivers. According to some recent research, being a bad driver may have nothing to do with age, race, gender or any other social distinction. Rather, your skills behind the wheel might actually be set at birth.

A 2006 study conducted by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory looked at the potential health risks involved with common house hold cleaners. What they discovered was less than comforting: the bottles of cleaners most of us use to clean our kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, etc. may actually be hazardous to our health.

Yes, Halloween is now over, but the sugar high is still soaring for many. We here at Swanson Vitamins celebrated in style last Friday with a company-wide costume contest, complete with prizes! I failed miserably with coming up with a costume, so I did not participate. Now that I think of it, nobody in my department dressed up!
But there were a ton of ghosts, goblins and fairy princesses roaming around the rest of the building to make up for our lack of creativity. In case you missed out on your Halloween party or trick-or-treating (or handing out treats), I thought I'd share some photos from our costume contest...maybe inspire you for next year.
The dreaded pig flu! So scarrrrrry!

The cold and flu season is still going strong. Runny noses, sore throats and trips to the walk-in clinic are abundant, and there are few signs of a slowdown. But how do you know if you are suffering from the common (and annoying) cold, or if you’ve come down with a case of the flu...or worse, swine flu?
