It seems there’s nothing Vitamin D can’t do. It’s becoming the kryptonite to all serious diseases. A 2009 review published by researchers from Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing concluded that an adequate intake of vitamin D may prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and reduce complications for those who have already been diagnosed.
The main reason most people choose modern medicine over other options is because they believe modern medicine is scientifically proven. That is, they trust the methods and treatments prescribed by their doctors are validated and proven effective...even safe. But is that really the case? A 2007 study calls it all into question.
I grew up on a farm, and while I may have failed at being a farmer (I’ve never driven a tractor or willingly set foot in a barn), there are a few things I learned to appreciate about my upbringing. One of the best things about farm life is farm food. From fresh-picked strawberries in early summer to the late August sweet corn, to me farm food is far superior tasting than anything I could buy at the local supermarket. Summer treats were snapping peas from the garden and snitching raspberries from the patch. Frozen and canned fruits and vegetables brought a taste of summer to winter.
We are a country founded on capitalism, a.k.a. consumerism. So it’s hard to listen to someone say that there are things we should go without. We’re used to buying the latest and greatest products, even though many times those products are harmful to our health. Today, I’ll show you five toxic products that you should definitely live without.
It might be time to hit the juice! No, not the kind that got Mark McGuire in hot water—the real kind from fruits and vegetables (mostly veggies). If you’ve ever talked with someone who routinely juices, you know how passionately they believe in the health benefits of raw juice. Once you start, it usually doesn’t take long to turn into a juicing evangelist. If you’re curious, here are the top three reasons to try juicing at home.
Ahhhh… spring time is finally here. We all look forward to the warmer temperatures, sunny days and outdoor activities like cook-outs, long walks and picnics at the park. On the down side, many of us have to do battle with allergies and sinus congestion, inflammation, pain and infections with sneezing and coughing and wheezing. Seasonal allergy sufferers are growing in number each year. What, you may ask, is behind the growing numbers and the misery?
Vitamin D, AKA the “Sunshine Vitamin,” was getting a lot of attention a few months ago during the swine flu scare. Now, new research from a group of Danish scientists is pointing to very real benefits of vitamin D in regard to immune health.
It always amazes me how fast two weeks can fly by. It’s been two weeks already since we last checked in with our Working for Wellness team, and there is some nice progress to report. I think it’s been over two months now since we started tracking our progress, and it seems like a lot of the changes in diet and exercise have gotten closer to becoming permanent for many of us. For me, I have a new, well-defined goal to work towards.
How to choose the right dietary supplements? Most of us are beyond this point, being seasoned veterans in the world of supplementation and healthy living. But if you’re like me, you remember how difficult it was to find the best starting point for beginning a supplementation program. Even picking the right multivitamin was a challenge. Having a step-by-step guide to supplements would have been very helpful then! Hence, our creation (and recent revamp) of “The 7 Basic Supplements for Good Health,” a guide for beginners.
My first encounter with my diagnosis of a “Systemic Yeast Overgrowth” a.k.a. Candida, came in late October. I went to an Allergist because I had a chronic runny nose, constant sneezing and blocked airways. Never had I experienced respiratory allergies. This was new to me. It started in the spring and went on relentlessly into the summer and fall. What could it be, I wondered? My blood work revealed that a yeast overgrowth was the culprit.
It takes approximately 21 days to learn a new habit. There are 31 days in January. Math wasn’t my best subject in school, but even I know that the healthy life-style changes made by the Working for Wellness team should be second nature by now! I would like to commend my teammates for making the commitment to Working for Wellness and for sticking with it. It’s not always easy to make changes, but when you make the right ones, they are totally worth it.
My apologies to all of you who will be reading this a day or two late, after the State of the Union address by President Obama (sign up for email updates and read posts the day they’re published)... But I’m wondering what, if anything, will be said about health care. What was once a front page story day after day has become lost somewhere on page C9. Granted, there have been more pressing news stories of late, like the tragedy in Haiti and the infamous Underwear Bomber, but it seems like nothing has happened with health care reform...or ever will.
Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Chris Kilham, the “Medicine Hunter,” (pictured at left) at a Health/Natural Supplement show in Las Vegas. Not every interview can be a thrill, but this one was. I also got to hear him do a presentation about his world-wide work with herbs and medicinal plants; he’s an electrifying speaker. That’s because he’s passionate, dedicated, knowledgeable, idealistic yet practical when it comes to looking at the big picture—the global picture.
Kilham is an ethno botanist who travels the world seeking out traditional, medicinal herbs from all over the globe that often have been used for centuries for various healing practices. He talks with healers and shamans, as well as scientists and experts in plant medicine, not to mention trade officials. This is a global effort to bring this knowledge to the forefront, while also establishing mutually-beneficial trade with indigenous cultures to harvest these herbs. This improves their local economy while coming to the aid of a world in a health care crisis. His motto is: “One tribe, one vibe.” He means it. He works tirelessly for this.
While it may not be “last-minute shopping” time quite yet, the clock is ticking down. We only have one week left until Christmas, or less if you’re like my family who exchanges gifts on Christmas Eve. I’ve got my shopping done, thanks to efficient online shopping (and lots of help from my wife), so I thought I’d come up with ideas for those of you who haven’t yet checked everyone off the gift list.
